While many people falsely believe that Rottweilers are ferocious dogs, the fact is that while dominant and aggressive Rottweilers can be extremely loyal, loving, protective and caring. Also called the Rottweiler Metzgerhund or the Butchers dog, this breed is sturdy and has a lot of strength and doggedness. They generally prefer colder climates those that have been bred in warmer climates tend to lose their waterproof undercoat over generations. Rottweiler puppies are adorable, but when they grow up they make great protection dogs.

Feeding and Grooming

As with most medium sized to large dogs, adult Rottweilers need only one large meal in a day. However being an athletic work dog, a Rottweiler needs a balanced diet that can be provided by fresh home food that includes meat, vegetables and whole grain. These fresh foods contain antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and probiotics that ensure the overall health of the breed.

With a small and hard outer coat, minimal grooming is required for the Rottweiler even when it is shedding. Daily brushing with a bristle brush and occasional wiping with a wet towel is all that is required. A bath can be given once every month. Cleaning the ears about twice a week should help in keeping them free from infections. Leaving a Rottweiler out in cold or moderate weather is perfectly fine since it also allows for more exercise. In hot climates however, your Rottweiler is likely to feel uncomfortable. While grooming levels required for the Rottweiler are low, it needs more than adequate amount of training and exercise to control its aggressive and dominant temperament.

Exercise

Since the Rottweiler is a working dog breed and an aggressive dominant one at that, the level of exercise required for this breed is fairly high. Simple walks in the park may not suffice and you may need active periods of games, ball catching and other exercise regimes to keep the temperament under control. Having a yard in your house can help lessen the load on you to some extent. Mental forms of exercise are also required for a Rottweiler. Obedience training can fulfill this need adequately.

Special care and health concerns

A Rottweiler’s life span ranges from 8 to 11 years. Some of the major issues that this breed can face are cardiac health disorders and elbow dysplasia. Sometimes cataract and epilepsy have also been observed.

- SAS – A heart related disorder, the Sub-Aortic Stenosis (also called SAS) is a congenital disease that has been observed in many Rottweilers. The issue is further complicated due to the fact that the disease does not show any specific symptoms and therefore is extremely difficult to detect.

- Gastric problems – Rottweilers tend to suffer from gastric problems like inflammation of the small or large intestines. These result in spasms, vomiting, diarrhea and pain. Your Rottweiler pet is unlikely to take in adequate amounts of nutrition during these times of pain.

- Addison’s disease – Rottweilers are prone to both kinds of Addison’s disease – Primary and Secondary. These are caused due to inadequate secretion of hormones by the adrenal glands and show symptoms like laziness, vomiting and poor appetite.

You hate to admit it, but your furry pal is getting a little older. You want to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy for many years to come. You have heard all of the hype about the new dog diets for older pets. Is there really a difference between dog food for adult dogs and kibble recommended specifically for seniors? How do you know when to switch your pet to a different diet?

The best resource for advice about dog diets is your pets vet. Only you and your trusted vet know the particular needs of your pet. Talk with your vet about any concerns and questions you may have. Your will vet help you with any changes, that is if any, need to be made to your dogs diet.

If your senior dog does not have any health troubles and keeps a healthy weight, then there will be no need to change your dogs diet from adult to senior dog food. But, on the other hand, if your dog has trouble keeping there weight down or digestive problems, you may need to switch diet. If weight is the only problem, then consider lowering the amount of dog food you give to your pet. This may be all the change your dogs diet needs.

A senior dog is classed as a dog in the last third of their life. Larger dogs, such as Great Danes, live to be about 9 years old. When they reach the age of 9 years old, you may want to think about a senior dogs diet. On the other hand, a Poodle will not reach senior status until about age of ten, this is due to the longer life expectancy. The decision to alter your dogs diet should be based on there health condition, rather than there actual age in years. Your vet will help you to decide when the right time is to change your dogs diet.

Dog food especially prepared for senior dogs typically has less calories. This helps to combat any weight issues. The senior dog food also contains more fiber for the different needs in your dogs diet. As dogs age, they tend to suffer from constipation, this extra fiber will help remedy this problem.

Renal failure can be a health problem for senior dogs. How can your dogs diet help with this problem? Cutting down the amount of protein in your dogs diet will decrease the work load of the kidneys. For the most part, this is the reason, senior dog food often has lower protein content than regular adult formulas.

You should when possible, give your dog to eat dry dog food to encourage excellent dental health. Dry kibble helps to reduce plaque and any tartar buildup. If your senior pet rejects the food dry, then try moistening it with water or you could the purchase moist canned varieties.

When your vet recommends supplements may be a help as part of your senior dogs diet. It Is because, some pets are unable to eat properly due to dental problems. many other older pets are not able to gain all of the nutrients from their food, this again is for various health reasons. Supplements such as, vitamins given everyday and glucosamine can be a great help to maintain a healthy diet for your dog.

Glucosamine helps joint health. For senior dogs, glucosamine can help to fight arthritis and hip displasia.

Vitamins C, A, and E, help reduce the natural aging process and encourage better health for senior dogs. You should talk to your vet about adding such supplements to your dogs diet.

We all want what is best for our pet. Your senior dog should have a diet that meets their nutritional needs. You and your vet should work together to determine what is the best diet for your senior dog. Your dogs diet will directly affect their health. Take care of your pet by supervising your dogs diet closely with the help of your veterinarian.

Just Cool Dogs

How often do you hear an owner shout, ‘Bad dog’ when what really needs to be said is ‘bad handler’. The feeling is very irritating when a dog jumps on you and puts paw prints over everything you’re wearing. When your front yard is the chosen venue for the next door dog to leave his many calling cards, this is also frustrating. The dogs are no worse than the children of the neighbor. What else other than bad behavior can you expect from animals and kids when the concerned adults have no idea what they are supposed to do?

The dog ought to be given pre-set behavioral limits when inside or when it is taken to public places. Sensible owners take the help of dog trainers who teaches them proper handling methods without breaking the natural spirit. Your vet office or local pet stores can put you in touch with trainers who hold group discussions with the owners along with their pet; or enroll in an online course to tackle any problems instantly.

A section of this training is involved with tutoring the owner how to handle his pet. There is a saying amongst trainers however that it is far easier to train dogs than the people that own them! Dogs need to practice when they are taught to walk with leash when they are taken out and for this they need to walk around in a yard or any other area. Owner and other residents get irritated when these animals bark even if it is a typical occurrence. When they bark, they are simply communicating with us; a reprimand him might give them the wrong signal and confuse them.

So why does a dog bark? Well, just like a young child or baby, it needs attention, food or something to drink. The noise of a dog barking can alarm the owners of a burglar intrusion so attempting to stop him from doing this may work against you. It is wrong to encourage a puppy to bark and then punish him for barking when he attains adulthood.

Trainers teach you how to promote the dog behavior you prefer by praising your pet and giving them the occasional treat. How do you make your puppy stop the undesired behavior? Well, simply learn to reward him when he does something which is ‘desired’ behavior. Don’t waste your time trying to teach a dog some behavioral pattern which contradicts his natural breed. To make your pet follow specific behavioral training, you ought to choose one from a breed with can give you what you need. Dedication, patience and a loving attitude are needed if you wish to train a dog.

Bringing home a puppy or even an adult dog for the first time is an exhilarating experience. For the puppy or dog it can be a time of extreme anxiety and stress.
So preparing for this exciting event is of the utmost importance, for you and your dog.
Preparing your home for his or her arrival
Deciding what type of character and personality is best suited to your lifestyle.
How much space do you have? This may determine the size of dog you should choose.
These and many other things have to be taken in to consideration before taking that all important step in to the canine world.
One thing is for sure that once you make that decision it is most definitely a commitment for life.
Whether you choose a puppy while foods coumadin avoid to on or a mature dog he or she is for life and is for sure a canine extension to your family.
Considering a dog from a rescue shelter should be high on your list, as this is effectively saving a dogs life.
Whatever your choice is, your new dog or puppy will without question give you in return, unconditional love, loyalty and years and years of fun and enjoyment.
This commitment, however, also comes with a suitcase full of challenges and if it’s your first time, a whole new learning curve.
Here are just a few things you will need to be ready for;
Dog Health and care –

Vaccinations every year

Dental Care

Bathing and Grooming

Preparing against those summer nasties, Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitoes

Food, diet and nutrition

Regular inspections of the ears and nether regions

And of course throughout their lives there will be many other things that will need your attention.
However, on the more fun side of things there are, nowadays, lots of dog activities that you can do

life half risperdal

such as;

Agility

Fun racing

Lure coursing

Showing

Flyball (new), which fast growing and tremendously exciting

Line Dancing, yes, I said line dancing. This is very popular and great to watch

All of these are very exciting and entertaining and of course will very much help you to build a bond with your dog.
The last thing I will talk about now is the dreaded dog behaviour training.
There are many books, courses and videos on this subject and I have very particular views on this subject.
This and of course the other things I have mentioned, I will be going in to in great detail on this blog. Therefore, my views, advise and recommendations will be well documented.
But, just to cover this subject briefly, you don’t want your new companion peeing on your new rug, eating your brand new 500 dollar Gucci watch or leaving teeth marks in your rear. So behaviour coaching, teaching your canine newcomer some of the family protocols is going to be necessary.
Dogs are like us, they come in all shapes and sizes, intelligent and a mixed bag of characters and personalities
Depending on whether you picked the short straw will determining how big a challenge this is going to be. In my experience it has been my most enjoyable part of a relationship with them.
I have a philosophy which has always worked for me and that is, dogs love routine, food and lots and lots of TLC.
If you give them those three things then you’re not going to have too many problems with your dog.
Hope to see you back soon.
